Losing weight after 40 is no easy task. In fact, it’s one of the hardest things I have to do. I have struggled on and off while in my 40’s and at age 48 I still have not reached my goals because I have gained the weight back on a several occasions. Some weeks I’m successful and I lose a few pounds and when I stop working out or have more cheat days than normal,  I notice that the weight creeps back on which can be discouraging.  So I decided to do some research and realized that in addition to hormonal imbalance, my body type was contributing to my success and failure.  I was so focused on making sure I naturally balanced my hormones by eating a healthy diet to include a healthy balance of proteins, carbs and fats that I didn’t realize that it was causing me to either not lose weight as quickly as I hoped or gain weight when I wasn’t consistently exercising. Have you ever heard of an Endomorph Body Type? Well, that’s my body type.  Knowing this helped me to focus on certain foods and eliminate other foods I was eating. If I want to be successful I have to pay attention to my diet and ensure that I continue to workout on a regular basis.  Doing this consistently was not easy but it was something I had to do. So if you find that you’re an Endomorph body type like me then you’re gonna have to put in the work. The good thing is you’ll lose weight and keep it off which is the ultimate goal. The body type concept was introduced in the 1940’s by William Sheldon. He determined that humans could be characterized by three body types – Endomorph, Ectomorph and Mesomorph. This theory took into account that not everyone would easily fit into one category and may be described by two of the three body types. However, this characterization is a great start for helping you to determine your body type and how to eat and train for your specific body type.

Personally, I found that knowing my body type has been extremely useful in helping me to understand why losing weight was so difficult especially getting rid of belly fat.  I realized that other factors such as my age and my hormonal health played a role but understanding the body type concept and applying it to my situation helped me tremendously in trying to lose weight after 40. I totally understood why it was such a struggle for me. After carefully researching the body types, I realized that I closely resembled the characteristics of the Endomorph body type. It perfectly described me and my personal situation. Knowing that I am an Endomorph and adjusting my training to include more resistance training like P90X and ChaLEAN Extreme as well as high intensity cardio like Insanity and tweaking my diet, I saw great results in less than a month. I saw belly fat disappear and more definition in my abs.  Also strength training workouts that include compound movements like in 21 Day Fix Extreme that work more than one muscle group at a time are the best exercises for Endomorphs.
